Introduction

Shakyamuni or Siddharta Gautama, also known as Gautama Buddha, was the founder of Buddhism.

He preached the message of love, peace, and harmony. He was born in Lumbini, which, today, is in Nepal. He was born in the kingdom of Shakya.

He gave his first sermon on the four noble truths in Sarnath. But after his death, he was famous by the name just ‘Buddha,’ which means the ‘Enlightened One.’

Birth and early life of Gautama Buddha

According to Buddhist texts and followers, Gautam Buddha was born in Lumbini, somewhere in Nepal but not as Buddha but as Siddharth Gautam.

Other proofs include a pillar in Lumbini stating that Siddharth was born there. His father, Suddhodana, was a chief of the Shakya tribe, and his mother was Maya Devi.

Some legends say that she dreamt that a white elephant with not two but six tusks entered her right side one day. Ten months later, Buddha was born.

Astrologers’ interpretation of this dream was that either the child would be a great king or leave everything and become an inspiring saint that would help

the world's welfare. We, of course, don’t know what he would have done if he became a king, but we know his greatness as a saint.

Path to enlightenment

After listening to what the astrologers had said, Suddhodana got worried and ordered the construction of a big palace where Siddharth would live and would not be able to listen to the cries and sorrows, resulting in him becoming a king instead of a saint.

He was married to Yashodhara, sister of Devdatta. Yashodhara, too, later became a Buddhist nun. They had a child named Rahul. But destiny has its ways.

So one day, Siddharth requested his father to take him on a kingdom tour. His father accepted, but the king ordered him to make preparations so that buddha could see no suffering and no sorrows.

But still, one time, Siddhartha saw a sick older man. Next, he saw a disabled man followed by a dead body. The fourth sight was of an ascetic.

The first three sights made him realise that the world is full of suffering, but the fourth sight showed him how to escape the suffering. So one night, he secretly ran from his house and went to a forest, intending to become an ascetic.

He kept wandering for six years. Then one day in Gaya, he sat under a banyan tree in a thicket of branches, and on the forty-ninth day, he received the supreme knowledge, therefore becoming the buddha.

The tree is now known as Bodhivriksha. Later buddha went on to give his first sermon in Sarnath. Some of his teachings show us the real meaning of life.

Teachings and Preachings of Buddha 

Buddha gave the people of the earth many teachings, but today let us talk about the main teachings of the buddha. buddha's teachings are divided into two parts-

The four noble truths -

  1. He preached that the world is full of suffering. Now, what causes suffering?
  2. The desire for worldly items causes suffering. How can we stop suffering?
  3. We can stop suffering by overcoming one’s desires. How can we overcome someone’s desires?
  4. To overcome desires, we need to follow the eight-fold paths

The above points take us to the second part of buddha’s teachings which are the eight-fold paths.

The Eight-Fold Paths-

  1. We need to keep our thoughts correct and cheerful but not hostile.
  2. Correct belief in god and,
  3. Proper meditation will lead us to nirvana(moksha) or salvation.
  4. Good memory may lead us to gratefulness, as we might remember the favours done by people towards us.
  5. Suitable means of livelihood means that we need to maintain a good living without hurting others and without forgetting the precepts.
  6. Right speech.
  7. Right effort and
  8. Proper action will surely lead us to success.

Buddha also said that if we follow all these steps and live a moderate life, which is neither too luxurious nor too tense then we can achieve Nirvana or Moksha.

Titles of Gautama Buddha

As we know from the above text, Buddha was a great man and was known by many names. So let us discuss some essential titles given to him-

  1. Samma Sambuddho - Properly Self Conscious, Buddha was a man who was awakened towards himself, the world, and all the creatures on the earth.
  2. Bhagavato - Enchanted One, He was the one whom everybody thought was blessed by god.
  3. Sugata - Well Spoken, Buddha was polite to everyone.
  4. Satthadeva-Manussanam - He was the teacher sent by God to humans to teach us more about god.

There have been great personalities since the beginning of time, but none’s greatness matches that of Buddha. Though he lost his kingdom, he won the kingdom of hearts. Inspiring millions, he was a man of truth and love.”
